The Green Box –

The Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer is easily one of the most recognizable pieces of gear in history. Known simply as the green box, this pedal has defined the sound of countless guitar legends. It is famous for its mid range bump that helps a guitar cut through a dense mix without getting lost. Whether you are playing blues or metal, that signature green enclosure is a symbol of a reliable and musical overdrive.

When you look at the different models, the TS9 sits in a very interesting spot. Compared to the original TS808, the TS9 is known for being slightly brighter and having a bit more grit. The TS10 on the other hand features a slightly different output buffer and a unique circuit layout that some players find a bit smoother than the earlier versions. While the TS808 and TS10 have become quite expensive on the used market, the TS9 remains the most affordable of the three. It gives you that genuine legendary circuit without the boutique price tag.

For me, the Tube Screamer style pedal is my all time favorite overdrive to use. There is just something about that green box sound that feels like home. It will have a permanent spot on my board forever. It does not matter if it is the TS9 specifically, a TS10, or even a great clone. The point is that this specific sound is exactly what I want to hear.

It is incredibly versatile for any situation. I love using it for a singing lead tone where the notes just sustain and bloom. It also works perfectly for that edge of breakup sound where you can control the grit with your hands. Even as a simple mid push gain to tighten up an amp, it never fails. This pedal is a total classic for a reason and I cannot imagine my rig without it.
