Clean Boost with One Knob –

So, let’s talk about the Keeley Katana Mini Clean Boost in white. If you spend any time scrolling through guitar forums or watching gear reviews, you’ve definitely come across this one. Robert Keeley is a huge name in the industry, and his pedals are known for being solid. Today at Fretwood, we are looking at this little white pedal to see what it’s all about and why, to be honest, it is kind of a mixed bag for me.

When it comes down to it, the Keeley Katana Mini is a super straightforward clean boost. Its only job is to take your guitar signal and give it a volume kick. You just hit the footswitch, twist the knob, and it pushes your amp harder. It is great for getting that extra volume during a solo, pushing your tube amp into that sweet spot where it starts to break up naturally, or just thickening up your tone if you feel like you are disappearing in a band mix. It is a total one-trick pony, but it does that one thing really well. It’s built to last and it’s one of the cleanest, most transparent boosts you can find.

That said, I have to be real… it’s not for me. The main problem is that pedalboard space is a pain. Every inch on my board is already spoken for, and I struggle to justify giving up a dedicated spot for a pedal that just adds volume. I’m all about multi-purpose gear. For instance, I can use a compressor to get a clean boost because it tightens everything up and adds that lift without needing an extra box. Or, I just grab my Tube Screamer, roll the gain all the way off, and crank the level. It gets me almost the exact same result as the Katana, but I still have the option to kick in some grit whenever I want it.

The Katana Mini is a cool, simple tool. If you are the kind of player who likes to set it and forget it and just needs a clean push for your tube amp, it works exactly as advertised. But if you are like me and you are always trying to shrink your board while getting more out of the pedals you already have, you might find that you can handle the boosting duties with stuff you already have on your board.

What’s your take? Are you into having a dedicated boost pedal, or do you prefer using other pedals to get that job done?
